211 Warmline (District of Columbia)
Last updated August 2026
When you do not know which DC program to call, dial 2-1-1. It is a free, confidential service that connects you to expert, caring help and community resources. From outside the District, call (202) 463-6211. The DC 211 Warmline answers Monday through Friday, 9am to 5pm.
If you call after hours, you are not stuck. Leave a detailed voicemail, and a call agent returns your call within 1 to 2 business days.
The referrals cover the needs that tend to pile up together: housing and utility expenses, food programs, benefits, healthcare, mental health, substance use, and crisis, emergency, and disaster recovery needs.
The service is part of a national network. It is operated by the United Way national 211 network, which routes callers to their local community-resource specialists. It is offered in English and Spanish, and you can also find help online at 211.org, including a directory to find your local 211.
Know what 211 is and is not. It is not the same as 911, which is for emergencies. And 211 refers you to help; it does not pay bills itself. Its value is knowing which local agencies and funds near you have money or open intake right now, which changes month to month.
Pair 211 with the District's main front doors. Use districtdirect.dc.gov for SNAP, cash assistance, and Medicaid, and call Legal Aid DC at 202-628-1161 for housing help. Because local funds open and close often, call the referrals you get quickly.
