Aged, Blind, or Disabled (ABD) Cash Assistance

Aged, Blind, or Disabled is Washington's own cash program, separate from SSI, for people the federal system has not caught yet. It pays up to $450 a month for a single person and $570 for a married couple. You qualify if you live in Washington and are 65 or older, blind, or at least 18 with a health condition expected to keep you from working for 12 straight months, within the income and resource rules.

Understand what ABD really is: a bridge with a built-in guide. The program requires you to pursue federal SSI, and DSHS's SSI Facilitation staff help you build and file the SSI or SSDI claim. That help matters, because first-time SSI claims are routinely denied for paperwork reasons. If you or your spouse already receive SSI, ABD is not for you; that is the design, not a rejection.

Approval also opens two important doors automatically. ABD makes your household categorically eligible for Basic Food, waiving the income and resource tests. And it establishes indigent status for Washington's eviction right to counsel, meaning a free court-appointed lawyer if a landlord sues you.

Getting on is a two-stage process: a financial interview, in person or by phone on weekday mornings, then a referral to a social worker who determines the medical side. Apply online at washingtonconnection.org, by phone at 877-501-2233, in person at a Community Services Office, by fax, or by mail.

Once approved, the grant arrives on the first of each month, by EBT card, direct deposit to your own bank account, or check to an approved payee. One warning for the forgetful: DSHS reaches out after 60 days of EBT inactivity, and cash left untouched for 274 days is permanently removed. Use the account.

ABD applicants usually qualify for Apple Health too, and approval triggers a referral to the Housing and Essential Needs program for rent, utility, and hygiene help through local providers. Take every door that opens; this program exists to hold you up while the federal claim grinds through.
