Alabama Family Assistance (TANF Cash Assistance)

Family Assistance, FA, is Alabama's TANF cash program for families with children. The payment is among the lowest in the nation: $264 a month for two, $304 for three, $344 for four, rising to $536 for eight. The average monthly benefit is about $188. Apply at the county Department of Human Resources where you live, or through OneAlabama at one.alabama.gov, and benefits come on the same EBT card as SNAP.

Be clear-eyed about the size. FA is a small bridge, so the real value is often the connected services and the SNAP and Medicaid it opens, not the check alone.

Eligibility runs on income after deductions. A family qualifies if countable income is less than the payment standard and it would receive at least $10, and income is figured after subtracting 30 percent for work expenses and childcare from gross income. The child must be under 18, or older if still in school.

There is a firm clock: an adult can receive FA for only five years, 60 months, in a lifetime. Treat every month as scarce.

The program comes with real obligations. The adult must take part in the JOBS program and accept a job unless the county directs otherwise, and must cooperate with child support and turn over child support received to the state. A parent under 18 with a child at least 12 weeks old must be in school or have a diploma and live with an adult.

Because the cash is small, stack the rest. SNAP reaches far more households, Medicaid covers the children (and forwards to ALL Kids if income is too high), and 2-1-1 tracks local emergency funds. Apply for those alongside FA.
