Alabama SNAP puts monthly food money on an EBT card you swipe like a debit card. About 376,000 Alabama households, including 330,600 children, receive it. Apply online at mydhr.alabama.gov, at any county Department of Human Resources office, or with a printable PDF application.
Alabama keeps stricter rules than many states, so know the two income tests. Households without an elderly or disabled member must meet both a gross limit of 130 percent of poverty and a net limit of 100 percent. For gross, that is $1,696 a month for one person, $2,888 for three, $3,483 for four. Households with a member 60 or older or disabled meet only the net limit.
There is also an asset test, which many states have dropped. Countable resources like cash, bank accounts, and stocks cannot exceed $3,000, or $4,500 for a household with an elderly or disabled member.
The benefit is real, and a household with no income gets the maximum: $298 a month for one person, $546 for two, $785 for three, $994 for four, plus $218 per additional person. The average benefit is about $121, and deductions, a standard deduction plus 20 percent of earned income, lift your amount.
Speed is available. Households with less than $150 in monthly gross income and limited resources get expedited processing within seven days, so say so if your cupboards are bare.
One work rule to note: able-bodied adults without dependents face work requirements and must report when work hours drop below 20 a week, averaging 80 a month. And if food is short today, dial 2-1-1 for the nearest pantry.
