Alaska Legal Services Corporation, ALSC, gives free civil legal help to low-income Alaskans. It is a nonprofit, founded in 1967, that handles civil, noncriminal problems. You can call the statewide intake line at 1-888-478-2572 to reach the office serving your area, or apply online at alsc-law.org/apply. Offices are open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Eligibility is income-based. Most applicants qualify if their income is at or below 125 percent of the Federal Poverty Income Guidelines for Alaska. In yearly dollars, that is $24,938 for one person, $33,813 for two, $42,688 for three, and $51,563 for four, with $8,875 added for each additional person. If money is tight, apply rather than assume you earn too much.
ALSC handles civil matters, not criminal charges. Its work covers housing, family law, domestic violence, public benefits, health care, consumer problems, elder issues, Alaska Native law, and veterans services. If you are facing eviction or a benefits cutoff, this is the kind of case it takes.
There is extra help for certain groups. ALSC gives added support for veterans and older adults, and for Alaska Native law matters. If one of those describes you, say so when you call, since it may connect you to a program built for your situation.
Be honest about the limits. Because of limited resources, ALSC cannot take every case. Each office sets its own priorities, approved by the governing board, so a case that fits one office's list may not fit another's. Applying early gives you the best chance of getting help in time.
