Alaska WIC gives free healthy foods, nutrition help, breastfeeding support, and health referrals. It serves pregnant and breastfeeding parents, and it serves the mother, father, grandparent, foster parent, or other guardian of a child under age 5. The income line for WIC is set at 185 percent of the Alaska poverty guideline. For July 1, 2026 through June 30, 2027, that is $36,908 a year for a one-person household and $76,313 a year for a family of four. Because that line sits well above the cutoff for some other programs, a working family that earns too much for food stamps may still qualify for WIC.
There is a shortcut on the income test. If you or your children are already income-eligible for SNAP, Medicaid, Denali KidCare, or the Alaska Temporary Assistance Program, then you automatically meet the WIC income guidelines. That means you may not need to prove your income all over again.
WIC is more than groceries. It gives free healthy foods, plus a nutrition and breastfeeding assessment, education, and support. It also refers families to other programs and services. Many parents find the breastfeeding help and the nutrition advice as useful as the food itself.
The food comes on an eWIC card, which you use like a debit card to buy WIC foods at the store. That keeps it simple and private at the checkout. You pick up your card and your food benefits after your first appointment at the clinic.
Come to your appointment ready. Bring your completed application forms, proof of income, and proof of identity, so one visit can finish your enrollment. A pregnancy is also a good time to apply for Denali KidCare or Medicaid, and to dial 2-1-1 for other local help.
