Arkansas TEA (Cash Assistance)

Transitional Employment Assistance, TEA, is Arkansas's TANF cash program for low-income families with children. The monthly cash assistance is $204. Apply online through Access Arkansas or at a local DHS county operations office, then interview with a case manager to develop a plan.

The most important fact is the clock, because Arkansas made it one of the shortest in the country. Under Act 266 of 2023, the state lifetime limit for TEA and Work Pays was cut from 24 months to just 12 months. That change took effect April 1, 2024, so treat every month as scarce.

TEA is work-focused by design. You work with a case manager to build a personal and career plan, and you must meet work-hours requirements to keep benefits.

Eligibility centers on the children: you must be an Arkansas resident with custody of a related minor child. The related Work Pays program helps families moving off TEA into work, and requires income below 150 percent of poverty.

Because the cash is small and the clock is short, the real value is often the connected help. TEA opens SNAP and Medicaid doors, and, importantly, receiving TEA is one of the few ways to skip the SNAP income and resource tests entirely.

Stack everything you can. Arkansas expanded Medicaid through ARHOME, so the adults may qualify for coverage, ARKids covers the children, and 2-1-1 tracks local emergency funds.
