CalFresh (Food Stamps) — Kern County DHS
Last updated August 2026
CalFresh puts grocery money on an EBT card every month. If you have almost nothing right now (under $150 in monthly income and under $100 on hand), say so when you apply: you may qualify for expedited benefits within 3 days.
Applying is one form, one interview, and some proof. Start however suits you: the call center at (661) 631-6062, a DHS office, or online at BenefitsCal.com. You'll answer questions about who buys and cooks food together, income, and your rent and utility costs. The county then interviews you, usually by phone, and lists any documents still needed. Answer that interview call even if the number looks unfamiliar. A missed interview is the most common way an approvable application stalls.
Report your housing and utility costs in full. The monthly amount is calculated from household size, income, and expenses, so costs you don't mention can mean a smaller benefit than you're owed. If your situation changes mid-application (income drops, someone moves in), tell the county, because the calculation follows what you report. Once approved, benefits arrive monthly on an EBT card that swipes at the register like any debit card.
While the application runs, eat tonight anyway. The CAPK Food Bank supplies 200+ distribution sites (dial 211 for the nearest), and the Salvation Army hands out food at 4417 Wilson Road, Monday–Thursday 1–4pm. Pregnant, or kids under 5 at home? WIC stacks on top of CalFresh with its own application at (866) 327-3074.

What the application looks like
Common questions
How fast can CalFresh start in Kern County?
Within 3 days if you qualify for expedited service (under $150 in monthly income and under $100 on hand). Otherwise, apply and the county will process your case on its normal timeline.
How much will I get each month?
There's no flat amount. It depends on your household size, income, and expenses. The county calculates it from your application.
Is help available in Spanish?
Yes. Kern County DHS serves CalFresh applicants in English and Spanish.
What happens after I submit a CalFresh application?
An interview, usually by phone, then a request for proof of what you reported. Answer the call and return the documents quickly; the county can't approve a case that's waiting on either.
Do I have to visit an office?
No. The whole application can happen by phone at (661) 631-6062 or online at BenefitsCal.com. Offices (Monday–Friday 7:30am–4pm) are there if in person is easier.
