Colorado WIC

Colorado WIC provides food assistance plus nutrition education, breastfeeding counseling and pumps, and family health support. It serves people who are pregnant, breastfeeding a baby under one year, a new mom who was pregnant or delivered in the past six months, an infant, or a child younger than five. Apply by contacting a local WIC clinic, or fill out the online referral form and staff will contact you within 10 days.

Who can apply is broader than the stereotype. Any caregiver of a child under five, a dad, a grandparent, a foster parent, can enroll that child in WIC. If a young child is in your care, this program is for your household.

Two barriers that stop people do not apply here. U.S. citizenship is not required to be eligible. And WIC serves many income levels, including working and non-working families, so a paycheck does not automatically rule you out.

Here is the income shortcut: if you are on Medicaid, Colorado Works, SNAP, or tribal food distribution, you are automatically income-eligible. Families not automatically qualified are checked against the current income guidelines, which the WIC site links to.

Enrollment finishes at an appointment. WIC staff help you figure out which documents to bring for the initial or re-enrollment visit, and they provide an acceptable-documentation list, so call ahead and ask.

WIC adds to the grocery budget; it does not replace it. SNAP carries the core food budget and a household can hold both, and WIC connects families to other health and food help. A pregnancy is also the moment to apply for Health First Colorado.
