DC SNAP (Food Assistance)

DC SNAP puts monthly food money on an EBT card you use like a debit card at most grocery stores. Apply online at districtdirect.dc.gov, by phone through the Department of Human Services Public Benefits Call Center at (202) 727-5355, by mail or fax, or in person at an Economic Security Administration service center. The District also adds a local Temporary Local Benefit called Give SNAP a Raise, worth up to 10 percent of your federal maximum.
There are two income lines to know. The gross monthly income limit is 130 percent of the Federal Poverty Line, which is $1,696 for one person, $2,888 for three, and $3,483 for four. There is also a net monthly limit of 100 percent of poverty. A household with a member age 60 or older, or a person with a disability, only needs to meet the net limit.
Here is the part many national guides get wrong. DC uses an expanded categorical eligibility rule with a 200 percent income standard, which is $2,610 for one person, $4,442 for three, and $5,360 for four. Households that get TANF or SSI qualify automatically. Most District applicants qualify this way, not through the lower 130 percent line, so apply even if you think you earn too much.
The benefit is real. A household with no income gets the maximum: $298 a month for one person, $546 for two, $785 for three, $994 for four, up to $1,789 for eight. The minimum benefit is $24. If you have some income, your amount is the maximum for your household size minus about 30 percent of your net monthly income.
One work rule started recently. New work requirements for able-bodied adults without dependents began June 1, 2026. If you are required to meet them and do not, you can get SNAP for only three months in a 36-month period. The office tells you at application or recertification whether this applies to you.
A few practical notes. Benefits load onto your EBT card on a set day based on the first letter of your last name, from the 1st of the month for A and B through the 10th for W to Z. Dial 2-1-1 if food is short today, and apply for WIC at the same time if you have young children.
