The income line is set by a federal standard: 185 percent of the federal poverty level. That is well above the SNAP cutoff, so a working family that earns too much for food stamps may still qualify for WIC.
There is a helpful shortcut on income. If you already get Medicaid, SNAP, or TANF, that generally settles the WIC income test. You still have to be in a WIC category, meaning pregnant, postpartum, breastfeeding, an infant, or a child under 5.
Household size is counted in a way that helps expecting parents. For the income test, a pregnant woman counts as two family members, which raises the income limit for her household.
A parent, foster parent, or guardian can apply for a child, so the person bringing the child to the appointment does not have to be the birth parent. WIC also opens the door to the Farmers' Market Nutrition Program for fresh local produce.
WIC adds to your grocery budget; it does not replace it. SNAP carries the main food budget, and a household can hold both at once. A pregnancy is also the moment to apply for Medicaid coverage for parent and baby.
