Food and Nutrition Services, or FNS, is what North Carolina calls SNAP. It puts monthly food money on an EBT card you swipe like a debit card at the grocery store. The fastest way in is online at epass.nc.gov. You can also apply in person at your county Department of Social Services, or mail a paper application to that same county office.
Here is the fact that changes how you apply: benefits are backdated to the day you apply, even if the application is not complete. So file today with what you have. A missing pay stub can follow later. Waiting to gather every paper just costs you money.

Most households qualify with gross monthly income at or below 130 percent of the federal poverty level, and a second test looks at income after deductions like rent and child care. The maximums right now run from $298 a month for one person to $1,789 for eight, plus $218 for each extra member. Most households get less than the maximum, and the county runs your actual numbers.
Every application leads to an interview, and that step is where cases move. After you file through ePASS or on paper, a caseworker calls within a few days to go over your household and income. Answer calls from numbers you do not recognize while your case is open, because a missed interview stalls everything.
