Hawaii WIC gives healthy supplemental foods on an eWIC card, plus nutrition education, breastfeeding support, and health referrals. It serves pregnant, breastfeeding, and postpartum women, and infants and children under age five who live in Hawaii. The program is run by the Department of Health. Eligibility is a two-part test, so know both halves. You must meet the WIC income guideline, and you must be found to have a medical or nutritional risk, which the clinic checks. Meeting the income line alone is not enough; the clinic visit decides the risk part.
The income line is set at 185 percent of the federal poverty level, revised each year. That is well above the SNAP cutoff, so a working family that does not qualify for food stamps may still qualify for WIC.
Being on other benefits can help you meet the income test. Families already on Medicaid (Med-QUEST), SNAP, or TANF generally meet the WIC income guideline, which can make the visit simpler. A parent or guardian can apply for a child.
The program is more than food. It offers nutrition education to build healthy habits, breastfeeding support and encouragement, and referrals to other health and social services, all at one clinic.
