Idaho CareLine 2-1-1

Last updated August 2026

When you do not know which program to call, use the Idaho CareLine. It is a free, statewide community information and referral service. You reach it by dialing 211 or 1-800-926-2588, or by texting 898211. It connects you to help near you with food, housing, mental health, and more.

The CareLine is run by the state, which is unusual. It is a program of the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare. Many states run 211 through a private nonprofit, but Idaho's CareLine is state-operated. That means it is tied to the same department that handles SNAP, Medicaid, and cash help.

It has set hours, so plan your call. The CareLine operates Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Mountain Time. If you call outside those hours, try again during the day or use the online tool instead.

The service connects you to local groups. It points callers to local nonprofits, charities, and faith-based organizations for help with food, housing, mental health, and other needs. It refers you to help; it is not a benefit you apply for.

There is also an online search tool. An online searchable resource database is available through findhelpidaho.org and the 211 Idaho community database. You can use it to look up local help on your own, day or night.

Use the CareLine as your front door. When one program does not fit, the CareLine can point you to the next one. It also handles the state's 2-1-1 information line, so one call can screen many needs. Keep the CareLine for food, housing, and utility help.
