Indiana SNAP puts monthly food money on a Hoosier Works EBT card you swipe like a debit card. Apply online through the FSSA Benefits Portal. If you have no computer or internet, you can apply at a local Division of Family Resources office, where paper applications are also available. Indiana keeps stricter rules than many states, so know them. Households without an elderly or disabled member must pass a gross income test set at 130 percent of the federal poverty level. And Indiana still applies an asset test, which many states have dropped: $3,000 for most households, or $4,500 when a member is 60 or older or disabled.
Every application includes an interview, and it is where cases move. A worker asks about your household, income, and resources, and you must return the listed verification documents by their due dates. Answer calls and mail promptly while your case is open.
Speed is available. Households with under $150 in monthly income and under $100 in cash and checking get expedited benefits within seven days; all others get a decision within 30 days.
The card comes automatically. Once approved, benefits load onto a Hoosier Works EBT card, mailed to your address within about 3 to 5 business days.
One work rule changed recently. Under 2025 changes, the age exception for able-bodied adults without dependents rose to 65 and older, the child exception now applies only to a child under 14, and the exceptions for homeless people and former foster youth were removed. Ask your worker where you stand, and dial 2-1-1 if food is short today.
