Iowa SNAP (Food Assistance)

Iowa SNAP is food assistance. It puts monthly food money on an EBT card. You swipe that card like a debit card at most grocery stores. SNAP used to be called food stamps. It is the same program with a new name.
There are three ways to apply. You can apply online through the HHS Services Portal at hhsservices.iowa.gov. You can call (800) 972-2017. Or you can mail or fax the paper HHS Food and Financial Support Application. Paper forms go to Imaging Center 4, PO Box 2027, Cedar Rapids, IA 52406, or by fax to 515-564-4017.
Every application includes an interview. Your local Iowa HHS office runs the exact income numbers for your household size. Working families, older adults, and people with disabilities with limited income may qualify. You do not need to guess if you fit. Apply, and the program decides.
The timing is set. A decision is made within 30 days after your interview. After you are approved, benefits load onto your EBT card within the first 10 days of each month. Benefits do not arrive on one fixed date for everyone. If your card is lost, a replacement usually arrives in 5 to 7 days after you report it missing.
One work rule can affect some adults. Able-bodied adults without dependents, called ABAWDs, face federal work rules. If you were working at least 80 hours a month and then stop, you must report that change. Ask your worker how the 80-hour rule applies to you.
If food is short today, do not wait for the SNAP decision. Dial 2-1-1 for a local food pantry. You can also apply for WIC if you have young children or are pregnant. Being on SNAP can even settle the income test for WIC. Stacking help keeps food on the table while your case is worked.
