WIC gives healthy food and support to families with young children. It serves pregnant, breastfeeding, and postpartum women, plus infants and children up to age five who are at nutritional risk. The income line is higher than SNAP's. WIC uses 185 percent of the federal poverty level. For July 1, 2026 through June 30, 2027, the annual limit is $29,526 for a household of one, $40,034 for two, and $50,542 for three. It rises about $10,508 for each additional household member. A working family that does not qualify for food stamps may still qualify for WIC.
There is an income shortcut. If your household is already enrolled in SNAP, you may be automatically income-eligible for WIC. That means you can meet the income test without going through the full income check. Being on Medicaid or FIP can also settle the income test.
The program is more than food. WIC provides nutrition education, breastfeeding promotion and support, immunization screening, and referrals to other health and social services. It is a place to get real help for a growing child, not just groceries.
Getting the food is simple. Food benefits come on an eWIC card. You use the card to buy approved nutritious foods at the store. The card makes the food part easy once you are enrolled.
Come to the appointment ready. Bring proof of your Iowa address, your identity, and your income, such as utility bills, ID, and pay stubs. WIC adds to your grocery budget, it does not replace it. SNAP can carry the main food budget, and a household can hold both. A pregnancy is also a good time to apply for Iowa Medicaid.
