Kansas Legal Services, called KLS, gives free civil legal help to low income Kansans. It works in all 105 counties and helps more than 18,000 people a year. It handles housing and eviction, family cases, consumer and debt problems, public benefits, and other noncriminal matters. Move fast on eviction, because the notice times are short. For nonpayment of rent, a Kansas landlord can start an eviction by giving you a 3 day notice to leave. That is a short clock, so call for help the day you get a notice.
Other lease problems follow a different path. For a lease violation that is not about rent, the landlord must first serve a 14 day notice to fix, or cure, the problem. If you do not fix it in that time, you must move out within the next 30 days, or legal action begins.
KLS helps a wide range of people. Its clients include working families, veterans, homeowners and renters, people with disabilities, and older adults. Getting help early gives your case the best chance.
Eligibility is based on income. At intake, you report the exact income for each person in your home, like your hourly pay and hours, or your gross yearly salary before taxes. Staff use that to check if you qualify. If money is tight, apply rather than assume you earn too much.
There are two ways in, with different hours. The phone intake line at 316-267-3975 runs Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 4:30 PM.
