Kansas WIC helps pregnant and breastfeeding people, new mothers, and children under age 5. It gives healthy food, nutrition help, breastfeeding support, and health referrals. The Department of Health and Environment, called KDHE, runs it through local clinics. Start the online pre-application at kswic.com/PreAppPortal, find your clinic at kdhe.ks.gov/wic, or call the state WIC office at 785-296-3683.
The income line is 185 percent of the federal poverty level. That is higher than the Food Assistance line, so a working family that does not get food stamps may still qualify for WIC. The guidelines update each year and take effect on or before July 1.
Here are the yearly income limits. A household of 2 can earn up to $29,526 a year, which is about $2,461 a month. A household of 3 can earn up to $40,034 a year, about $3,337 a month. A household of 4 can earn up to $50,542 a year, about $4,212 a month.
There is an income shortcut. Being on KanCare Medicaid, SNAP, or TANF generally meets the WIC income test. A parent, foster parent, or guardian can apply for a child. You must also live in Kansas and have a nutritional need, which the clinic checks.
WIC is more than food. Benefits include a WIC card to buy healthy food, personal nutrition advice, breastfeeding support, and health and nutrition classes. WIC also screens for shots and gives referrals to other services that can help the whole family.
Come to your visit ready. The clinic finishes your enrollment in person after your pre-application. WIC adds to your food budget, it does not replace it, so a household can hold both WIC and Food Assistance. A pregnancy is also a good time to apply for KanCare. You may qualify, but the clinic decides.
