Legal Services of North Dakota

Last updated August 2026

Legal Services of North Dakota gives free civil legal help to low-income and older North Dakotans. It does not charge clients for legal services. To get help, you must meet income requirements, have a North Dakota legal issue, and complete an application. Applications are taken by phone during intake hours.

There are two phone lines. If you are under age 60, call the general intake line at 1-800-634-5263. If you are age 60 or older, call the senior legal hotline at 1-866-621-9886. Intake runs Monday through Thursday, 9am to 3pm Central.

Apply by phone, not by message. The office does not accept new applications by email, fax, or a voicemail left for a staff person. So plan to call one of the intake lines during those hours.

The programs handle civil, noncriminal problems. That includes government and public benefits, family law, housing, consumer problems, health issues, elderly law, domestic violence, and veteran services.

Do not assume you earn too much. If money is tight, apply and let them check. Civil legal problems like eviction move on court deadlines, so call as soon as a notice or court paper arrives.

Stack your help. Dial 2-1-1 for local rent funds that may clear a balance before a case gets worse, and use the Customer Support Center at 1-866-614-6005 for benefits like SNAP and Medicaid.
