Louisiana WIC is a nutrition program run by the Health Department's Bureau of Nutrition Services for pregnant, breastfeeding, and postpartum women, plus infants and children up to their fifth birthday. It provides healthy food, nutrition information, breastfeeding support, and referrals. To apply, find a WIC clinic near you and call to schedule; the statewide line is 800-251-BABY (800-251-2229).
The food covers real staples. Benefits can include infant formula and cereal, low-sugar cereals, milk, cheese, eggs, peanut butter, beans, whole grains, and fresh fruits and vegetables. For a family with a baby, the formula alone makes WIC worth the visit.
WIC uses the standard 185 percent of the federal poverty level income guideline, well above SNAP's cutoff, so a working family that does not qualify for food stamps may still qualify for WIC. Do not assume you earn too much.
