Maine SNAP (Food Supplement)

Maine SNAP, called the Food Supplement Program, puts monthly food money on an EBT card you use like a debit card at most grocery stores. You can apply online through My Maine Connection, or by phone, mail, email, or fax to the Office for Family Independence. The phone line is 1-855-797-4357, Monday through Friday, 7am to 4pm. Being on other benefits does not rule you out, and working families, older adults, and people with disabilities all apply through the same program. There is no cost to apply, and you do not have to be out of work to qualify. The first number to know is the income limit. Maine sets the gross monthly income limit at 200 percent of the federal poverty level. That is $2,609 for one person, $3,525 for two, $4,442 for three, and $5,359 for four, with $917 added for each extra person in the home. These limits took effect January 15, 2025.

That 200 percent line matters more than it sounds. Many states cut people off at 130 percent of poverty, but Maine's line sits well above that. So a working family with a higher paycheck can still qualify here. If someone once told you that you earn too much for food stamps, it is worth applying in Maine anyway.

The benefit is real money. A household with little or no income can get the maximum amount, which is $298 a month for one person, $546 for two, $785 for three, $994 for four, and $1,183 for five, with $218 added for each extra person. These amounts took effect October 1, 2025. The Office for Family Independence runs your household's numbers to set your own amount, so what you get depends on your income and size. Your benefits load onto the EBT card each month, and you use that card like a debit card at most grocery stores in the state.

There is one work rule to plan for. If you are 18 to 64, able to work, and do not live with a child under age 14, you must work or take part in a work program at least 80 hours a month to keep benefits past a time limit. An adult in that group who does not meet the work rule can get SNAP for only three months in a set three-year period. If a work program can help you meet the hours, ask about it when you apply.

Do not wait if food is short. You can apply online at My Maine Connection, and the same application also covers MaineCare and TANF, so you can ask for more than one program at once. The sooner you apply, the sooner your case can be reviewed, so it helps to start today even if you are still missing a document.
