Maine TANF (Cash Assistance)

Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, or TANF, is Maine's monthly cash assistance for low-income families. It gives cash to families while they work toward supporting themselves, and it can connect you to job training and education. You can apply online through My Maine Connection, by mail, email, or fax to the Office for Family Independence, or in person at a district office. The program is built for families with children. Families with dependent children living in the home, and pregnant people, may be eligible. There is an income and resource test, so the state looks at what your household earns and owns to decide. If a family qualifies, the cash arrives each month while the household works on a plan. Most adults on TANF take part in ASPIRE, the work program. ASPIRE stands for Additional Support for People in Retraining and Employment. The support services can include help with the things that make working possible, so the plan is about more than just the cash.

Maine ties several related programs to TANF. HOPE, which stands for Higher Opportunity for Pathways to Employment, helps parents enroll in and finish training and education by paying for related costs. Parents as Scholars gives a monthly benefit to eligible parents working toward a two-year or four-year degree. Emergency Assistance serves Maine families with children under age 21, or pregnant people in the third trimester, who face a short-term crisis.
