Massachusetts SNAP is run by the Department of Transitional Assistance, the DTA. It puts monthly food money on an EBT card you swipe like a debit card. The fastest way in is online through DTA Connect, and there is a DTA Connect mobile app too. You can also apply by phone on the DTA Assistance Line at 877-382-2363 (press 7 for SNAP), or by mail.
The income door is wider than the federal default. Massachusetts uses broad-based categorical eligibility, so the gross monthly income limit for most households is 200 percent of the federal poverty level, not the federal 130 percent. That is $2,660 a month for one person, $3,607 for two, $4,553 for three, $5,500 for four, plus $947 for each additional person. If you are unsure, apply and DTA will decide.
The benefit is real. Maximum monthly amounts are $298 for one person, $546 for two, $785 for three, $994 for four, plus $218 per additional person, and your actual amount varies with income and expenses. If approved, benefits go back to your application date.
Here is the Massachusetts bonus most people miss: the Healthy Incentives Program, HIP. When you use SNAP to buy fresh local fruits and vegetables from participating farm vendors, HIP puts money right back on your EBT card, dollar for dollar, up to a monthly cap: $40 for one to two people, $60 for three to five, $80 for six or more. Immigration fears should not stop you. SNAP is not part of a public charge test, and a non-citizen can safely apply to get SNAP for an eligible family member, like a U.S. citizen child. You can also name a trusted authorized representative to apply, renew, or shop for you.
