Missouri Temporary Assistance (Cash Assistance)

Temporary Assistance, TA, is Missouri's TANF cash program, a monthly benefit to help families cover costs for their children like clothing and utilities. To qualify, you need a child under 18 (or under 19 and expected to graduate) in the home, Missouri residency, and income under the gross and net maximums, which are roughly $1,632 a month for one person up to $4,104 for four. Apply online at mydss.mo.gov.

Two limits are stricter than usual. The asset test is tight: resources under $1,000 for applicant families, or under $5,000 for families who have entered a self-sufficiency pact. And the lifetime clock is shorter than the federal one: Missouri limits TA to 45 months in a lifetime, not 60, unless the parent is a teen under 18. Hardship extensions are considered for reasons like domestic violence.

The work requirement has teeth. Non-exempt participants must meet with a Missouri Work Assistance contractor for job preparation, and if they do not comply within 10 weeks, the TA grant closes. After a closure, you must register at jobs.mo.gov and complete 30 hours of work activity for at least a week to regain eligibility.

There is a child support duty too. Not cooperating with child support enforcement reduces the TA grant by 25 percent, unless good cause is granted.

Ask about a lump sum before you start the monthly clock. TA Cash Diversion offers a single lump-sum payment instead of a monthly grant to resolve a one-time need. It does not count toward the lifetime limit, and you can get it once every 12 months and up to five times in a lifetime.

Because the cash is modest and time-limited, stack the rest. The same income often qualifies the household for SNAP and MO HealthNet, which expanded to cover adults, and 2-1-1 finds local emergency funds. Once approved, an EBT card is mailed within 5 to 7 business days.
