New Hampshire Medicaid, also called Medical Assistance, is free or low-cost health coverage. It covers many groups: children under 19, pregnant people, parents and caretaker relatives, seniors, people with disabilities, and low-income adults. You can apply online through NH EASY at nheasy.nh.gov, or call the DHHS Customer Service Center at 1-844-275-3447, Monday through Friday, 8am to 4pm.
New Hampshire did expand Medicaid to cover more adults. The Granite Advantage Health Care Program covers low-income adults age 19 through 64. That means an adult without children can be covered, which was not always true here. So it is worth applying even if you were turned down in the past.
Children have their own coverage levels that reach well up the income scale. Children's Medicaid covers kids under 19 with net income no higher than 196 percent of the federal poverty level. Expanded Children's Medicaid, which is New Hampshire's CHIP tier, covers children under 19 whose net income is above 196 percent but no higher than 318 percent. A working family that earns too much for other programs may still get their children covered.
Coverage for pregnancy lasts past the birth. When a pregnant person qualifies, the coverage continues for 12 months after the baby is born. That gives new parents a full year of care during a time when health needs are high.
For the adult groups, there is no asset or savings test. The pregnant, parent and caretaker, Granite Advantage, and family planning groups use tax-based income rules, called MAGI, so your savings do not block coverage. You do need to be a New Hampshire resident who plans to stay, be a citizen or a qualified non-citizen, and give a Social Security number or proof that you applied for one.
The benefits are wide. New Hampshire Medicaid pays for doctor visits, dental care through NH Smiles, prescriptions, family planning, child health screenings, care during pregnancy, vision, hearing, nursing-facility and in-home care, hospice, mental health care, and treatment for substance use.
