New Mexico LIHEAP (Energy Assistance)

New Mexico LIHEAP helps eligible households pay their home energy bills. It covers both heating in winter and cooling in summer, which matters in this state. If you qualify, the Health Care Authority pays the benefit straight to your fuel or utility provider. Apply online at yes.nm.gov, or at your local Income Support Division office. You apply with one form. LIHEAP uses form LHP-602, which you can fill out and submit through the YESNM portal or at an ISD office. The state offers it in English, Spanish, Vietnamese, and Chinese.

The income line is higher than for many programs. LIHEAP reaches households up to 150 percent of the federal poverty guidelines. The state uses a points system: households at or below 110 percent of poverty get more points, and households between 111 and 150 percent get fewer.

The benefit is a set range. Payments run from a minimum of $70 up to a maximum of $490. The amount is figured at $35 per point, with a cap of 14 points. So the more points your household earns, the larger the benefit, up to that ceiling.

There is a fast lane for emergencies. Crisis LIHEAP helps households whose utility service is already disconnected, or who have less than 10 percent of their fuel left, or who need a deposit to get service. If a shut-off is coming, include the disconnect notice and ask for crisis help right away.

Here is the path. You provide proof of income for the last 30 days and proof of your heating and cooling cost. After you apply, you have an interview about ten days later. The state then notifies you by letter within 45 days on whether LIHEAP is approved. If you qualify for LIHEAP, you may also qualify for free weatherization work.
