New Mexico SNAP puts monthly food money on an EBT card you use like a debit card at most grocery stores. The state Health Care Authority runs it. Apply online through the YESNM portal at yes.nm.gov, or at your local Income Support Division office. You can also call the Customer Service Center at 1-800-283-4465.
Know the income line first. The gross monthly income limit is 130 percent of the federal poverty guidelines. That is $1,696 a month for one person, $2,888 for three, and $3,483 for four. There is also a net income limit of 100 percent of poverty.
New Mexico also runs an asset test. Most households cannot own more than $3,000 in countable resources. The limit is $4,500 if at least one member is age 60 or older or has a disability. You must also be a U.S. citizen or a qualified lawful resident.
The benefit is real money. A household with no income gets the maximum: $298 a month for one person, $785 for three, and $994 for four. The smallest allotment for a qualifying household is $24 a month.
One rule can save you money. Your SNAP starts from the date you apply, not the date you are approved. So file early, even if your application is not complete yet. If food is short right now, ask about Expedited SNAP, which can move faster for households in urgent need.
Here is the path. After you apply, you complete an interview by phone or in person, usually about ten days later. A regular application can take up to 30 days to process. SNAP is usually approved for a year, with an interim report due about every six months to keep it going.
