North Dakota WIC

Last updated August 2026

WIC gives healthy food, nutrition help, and breastfeeding support. It serves pregnant women, moms breastfeeding an infant under 1 year, new moms who had a baby or were pregnant in the past 6 months, and infants and children under age 5. Any caregiver of a child under 5 can get WIC for that child, including a dad, grandparent, or foster parent. To start, call the statewide line at (800) 472-2286, go to signupwic.com, or call your local WIC clinic.

The income line sits higher than many people expect. Your household gross income must be at or below the WIC guidelines. For June 1, 2026 through June 30, 2027, that is $29,526 a year ($2,461 a month) for a household of 1, $40,034 for 2, $50,542 for 3, and $61,050 for 4, adding $10,508 a year per extra member. If you are pregnant, add one to your household size. The WIC line is 185 percent of the federal poverty level, well above SNAP's cutoff, so a working family may still qualify.

There is an income shortcut. If you are on Medicaid, TANF, or SNAP, you are automatically income-eligible for WIC. You still need a nutritional or medical need, which WIC staff can find by checking height, weight, and iron level and asking a few health and diet questions.

Do not believe the myth that WIC is only for mothers or only for people out of work. It is open to many incomes for both working and non-working families, and it welcomes any caregiver of a child under 5.

Plan for one in-person visit. You must enroll in person at a WIC clinic. The first appointment takes about 30 to 45 minutes. If you qualify, you get your WIC food benefits that day to use at your local grocery store.

Here is what you get. Free healthy food such as fresh fruits and vegetables, milk, cheese and yogurt, cereal and grains, and peanut butter and beans, plus nutrition counseling and breastfeeding support, including breast pumps.
