The income limits reach higher than most people guess. The federal 2026 gross limits: $1,696 a month for one person, $2,292 for two, $2,888 for three, $3,483 for four, before taxes. If someone in your home is 60 or older or disabled, the gross test is skipped entirely. Many states raise these limits further, so apply even if you are near the line.
Two federal deadlines protect you in every state. The agency must decide within 30 days. And if you have almost nothing, under about $100 on hand and little income coming, expedited service must get you benefits within 7 days. Benefits also reach back to the day you applied, not the day you were approved. So apply now, even half-ready.
Every state includes an interview, usually by phone, and requires proof of identity and income: pay stubs, an employer letter, or award letters. Everyone applying needs a Social Security number or proof they applied for one. Once approved, your EBT card works at stores in all 50 states.
Two groups who wrongly count themselves out. College students enrolled half-time or more qualify with an exemption, like working 20 hours a week, work-study, or caring for a young child. And able-bodied adults without dependents get 3 months per 3 years unless working 80 hours a month, but veterans, pregnant people, and homeless individuals are among the excused. If you are denied, you have 90 days to request a fair hearing.
