South Carolina WIC serves children under age 5, new mothers, and pregnant or breastfeeding women, with more than $300 a month in benefits: monthly funds for healthy food, nutrition support, and breastfeeding counseling. A father, grandparent, foster parent, or other legal guardian can apply for a child under 5. Use the online pre-application to check eligibility, or call 1-855-472-3432 to schedule an appointment.

The income line is 185 percent of the federal poverty level, well above SNAP's 130 percent, so a working family that does not qualify for food stamps may still qualify for WIC. Do not assume you earn too much.

Here is the income shortcut: if you already receive Medicaid, TANF, or SNAP, you automatically meet the income requirement. One practical note, though: to prove that income, bring an active SC Medicaid card or a valid SNAP or TANF notice of eligibility. A SNAP EBT card by itself is not accepted as proof.

WIC is not only for mothers. Fathers, grandparents, and other guardians can apply for an eligible child under 5, so a household raising a young child on a fixed income has a real reason to apply.

The food arrives on an eWIC card, a debit-style card used to buy WIC-approved foods at authorized stores. Alongside the food, WIC provides personalized nutrition information, one-on-one breastfeeding counseling, immunization screening and referral, and referrals for other family services.

WIC adds to the grocery budget; it does not replace it. SNAP carries the core food budget and a household can hold both, and a pregnancy is also the moment to apply for Healthy Connections Medicaid.
