South Dakota Housing helps income-eligible renters find and keep a place to live. It is the South Dakota Housing Development Authority, a nonprofit created by the Legislature in 1973 to finance affordable housing across the state. The main rental help is the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher. A voucher pays part of your monthly rent so your share fits your income. The voucher waitlist opens at certain times, so ask about the current status when you call.
There is more than one rental program. Rental assistance options include the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher, Security Deposit Assistance, and Section 811 supportive housing. Section 811 helps people with disabilities. Ask which one fits your situation.
South Dakota Housing does more than rentals. It offers mortgage loans, down payment assistance and homebuyer education, housing construction and rehabilitation, and homelessness prevention. It also supports homeless and emergency housing programs through its housing partners.
