TANF is Illinois' monthly cash for families with children, and the current numbers surprise people. $617 a month for a family of two. $777 for three. $938 for four, effective October 2025. The widely quoted $549 is years out of date. Apply at ABE (abe.illinois.gov) or your Family Community Resource Center. Cash arrives on the Link card or by direct deposit.
You qualify while pregnant or with a child under 19 at home, as a citizen or qualifying immigrant, living anywhere in Illinois, homeless included. Working is rewarded, not punished: benefits drop only $1 for every $4 you earn.
Illinois' 60-month lifetime clock has a feature most states do not have. Months where you work 30 or more hours a week, with reported earnings, do NOT count. Full-time college with a 2.5 GPA can stop the clock. So can approved caregiving and domestic violence situations. The state mails warnings at 48, 54, and 57 months, and the last one includes an exception request form.
The strings: a Responsibility and Services Plan with work activities of 20 hours a week if your youngest is under 6, 30 if older, 35 for two-parent families. Decisions come within 45 days.
If TANF's limits rule you out, the same ABE application reaches SNAP at $3,665 a month for a family of three, and All Kids covers the children regardless of status. Appeals get 60 days, and benefits continue if you appeal before the cutoff date.
