The income limits are higher than most people guess. In 2026 a single person can earn up to $1,696 a month before taxes. A family of four can earn up to $3,483. If someone in your home is 60 or older, or has a disability, the limit is looser still. These are the state's tables; the office makes the final call.
Here is a rule almost nobody knows. Your application counts the moment it has three things: your name, your address, and your signature. You do not need pay stubs or a finished form to start the clock. You have the right to file the same day. The proof comes later, and the worker must give you at least 10 days to send it, and must help you get papers you cannot get yourself.
The state has 30 days to decide. If you have almost no money and no food, say so. Households in that spot can get expedited SNAP within 7 days, and a worker may call in as little as 2 days.
While you wait, keep eating. Food pantries ask nothing about pending cases, and 2-1-1 finds the nearest one. If you are pregnant or have a child under 5, Tennessee WIC stacks on top of SNAP, and being on SNAP settles WIC's income test.

How to apply

Apply at onedhs.tn.gov/csp. No computer? Call 1-833-772-8347, or walk into your county DHS office. Every Tennessee county has one.

File even if the form is not finished. Name, address, and signature are enough to lock in your date. Benefits reach back to that date if you are approved.

Ask for expedited SNAP if you have little or no money right now. That moves the deadline from 30 days to 7.

Do the interview by phone. That is the default; nobody has to come to an office. You can pick your own interview time in the portal.

Send the proof the worker asks for. You get at least 10 days, and the worker must help with papers you cannot get.

Watch for the decision, then the card. Money lands on your Benefit Security Card each month, on a day set by the last 2 digits of your Social Security number.
