Unemployment Compensation (Alabama)

Last updated August 2026

If you lost your job through no fault of your own, file your Alabama unemployment claim through the UI Claimant Portal at uiclaimantportal.labor.alabama.gov. The claimant help line is 1-800-361-4524. The weekly benefit runs from a $45 minimum to a $275 maximum, calculated from your base-period wages, among the lower maximums in the country.

To qualify, you need insured wages in at least two quarters of your base period, and total base-period wages of at least one and a half times your highest quarter. Your total payable amount for the year depends on those wages and the state unemployment rate.

There is a bonus for retraining. Claimants in approved training may qualify for an additional five weeks of benefits, five times the weekly amount added to the maximum. If you are considering a training program, ask whether it qualifies.

Two practical notes. Benefits are funded by employers, not workers; employers pay taxes on the first $8,000 of each employee's earnings. And you may elect to have federal tax withheld, which reduces your weekly benefit by 10 percent.

One heads-up about naming: the Alabama Department of Labor is becoming the Alabama Department of Workforce, and its site is adol.alabama.gov, so do not be surprised if the name shifts mid-claim.

A $275 ceiling does not replace a paycheck, so stack support from week one. SNAP catches many households, ALL Kids keeps children insured, and 2-1-1 knows which local funds bridge rent between jobs.
