Lost your job, or lost hours, through no fault of your own? California unemployment pays $40 to $450 a week. Apply online through myEDD, and don't wait: the first payment usually takes about three weeks to arrive.
Filing means creating a myEDD account at edd.ca.gov and answering questions about your last 18 months of work: employers, dates, wages, and why the job ended. Write that history out before you start (names, addresses, dates) so the application doesn't stall on memory. And answer the "why" plainly and honestly. Eligibility turns on losing work through no fault of your own, and shading the answer creates delays that straight answers don't.
After filing, certifying becomes your rhythm: each week you confirm you're able, available, and looking for work. Payments ride on those certifications, so treat them like a standing appointment. And plan around the roughly three-week gap before money arrives. File the week the job ends, not when savings run out.
Unemployment rarely replaces a whole paycheck, so stack support around it. CalFresh can put grocery money on an EBT card, within 3 days for households with almost nothing on hand. And if illness or injury is why you can't work, unemployment is the wrong program; State Disability Insurance is, through the same EDD.
