If you lost your job through no fault of your own, Iowa unemployment gives temporary weekly payments. File and manage your claim online through IowaWORKS at iowaworks.gov. Know the time limit up front. Most claims have a maximum of 16 weeks of benefits. Some claims may allow up to 26 weeks. Iowa cut the standard cap from 26 to 16 weeks under a 2022 law. Because the window is short, plan from your first week.
The weekly claim keeps your payments coming. You must file each weekly claim between 12:01 a.m. Sunday and 11:59 p.m. Friday. Filing in that window pays you for the previous week. Miss the window, and you can miss a payment.
There is real work you must do each week. You must complete four reemployment activities every week. At least three of those must be job applications. You also must register in IowaWORKS. Keep records, because these can be checked.
Part-time work affects your payment. If you earn $15 more than your weekly benefit amount, you get no payment that week. Report your earnings honestly. Dependents you claim on your federal tax return can raise your weekly amount, so have their Social Security numbers ready when you file.
If you are denied, you can appeal, but move fast. An appeal must be postmarked or received within 10 calendar days of the decision date. While your claim is worked, stack support.
