If you lost your job through no fault of your own, file your Louisiana unemployment claim through the HiRE system online, run by the Louisiana Workforce Commission. You file both your initial claim and your weekly certifications there. The weekly benefit runs from a $35 minimum to a $275 maximum, among the lower maximums in the country, based on your base-period wages.

Duration changed, so ignore the old rule. The flat 26-week maximum no longer applies. For new claims filed on or after January 5, 2025, the maximum number of weeks is set by the average of the three most recent state unemployment rates when you file. The Monetary Determination the state mails after you file lists your maximum benefit amount and how many weeks you qualify for.

To qualify, you need enough wages in your base period, the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters before you file, and you must meet job-separation and ongoing availability rules.

The weekly work-search requirement also changed. Claims first filed before January 4, 2026 require three activities a week; claims filed on or after January 4, 2026 require five a week. Complete and record them each week, or benefits can stop.

There may be extra help if you exhaust regular benefits. During certain periods, claimants who use up regular benefits may qualify for Additional Benefits, up to eight extra weeks. Watch for notices about it.
