By statute your weekly benefit is 50 percent of your average weekly wage, capped at two-thirds of the state average weekly wage, and that maximum resets each year.

Duration is not a flat 26 weeks for everyone. Your total benefits equal the lower of 33 and a third percent of your total wage credits, or 26 times your weekly amount. Lower earners can run out before 26 weeks, so budget for that possibility rather than assuming the full run.

Two timing rules quietly cost people money. The first eligible week is a required unpaid waiting week before any benefits can be paid. And the earliest a payment arrives is the third week after your benefit account is established, so plan for a gap at the start.

Your benefit is built from your work history: gross wages from all employers over a recent 52-week base period, and you need enough base-period earnings to qualify. The determination the state sends after you apply shows your figures.

The weekly routine is where claims quietly die. Each week you must be able and available for work and actively seeking suitable work, and you must request your payment. Miss a week and it does not pay, so put it on a calendar.
