Unemployment Insurance (New Mexico)
Last updated August 2026
If you lost your job through no fault of your own, New Mexico unemployment gives temporary weekly pay while you look for work. It is funded by employer payroll taxes, not by money taken from your paycheck. File your claim online through the state UI Tax and Claims System at jobs.dws.nm.gov, which is the fastest way, or by phone at 1-877-664-6984.
Your amount comes from your past wages. Benefits are based on your base period, which is the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters before your claim. You must have been paid wages in at least two of those quarters. Your exact weekly amount is set from those wages, so it is different for each person.
There is a cap on the total. The most you can get in a benefit year is the lesser of two numbers: 26 times your weekly benefit amount, or 60 percent of your base-period wages. That makes 26 weeks the effective maximum length for regular benefits.
Plan for a waiting week. New Mexico law requires a one-week waiting period before any benefit is payable. So the second week you claim is the first week you can actually be paid, if you are otherwise eligible.
The weekly routine keeps benefits flowing. Each week you must make and report at least two different work-search contacts, and certify that you are available for at least 20 hours of work and seeking two new employers. You also must give your last employer's name and address and register with the New Mexico Workforce Connection within 14 days of filing.
Report work honestly and stack other help. If you quit without good cause or were fired for misconduct, you may be disqualified until you earn wages equal to five times your weekly amount in new covered work. Because a job loss hits the whole budget, apply for SNAP and Medicaid too, and dial 2-1-1 for local funds that bridge rent between jobs.
Help available in English and Spanish.
