New York unemployment finally caught up with New York prices: the maximum is now $869 a week, up from $504, where it had been frozen since 2019. The minimum is $140. Benefits run up to 26 weeks. File online at unemployment.labor.ny.gov, or call the Telephone Claims Center at 888-209-8124 on weekdays.
You qualify with wages in at least two quarters, at least $3,500 in your best quarter, and job loss through no fault of your own. Your weekly rate is roughly your best quarter divided by 26. The state's calculator at ux.labor.ny.gov gives an estimate before you file.
The rhythm that keeps you paid: certify every single week, online through your NY.Gov ID or at 1-888-581-5812, and complete at least three work-search activities a week with a written record. Keep that record a year; the state can demand it. Expect ID.me identity verification after filing.
Two timing realities. New York still has an unpaid waiting week, and you must certify for it anyway. And first payments typically land two to three weeks after the claim completes, sometimes longer, so file the day you lose work, not when the severance runs out.
An $869 ceiling is real money, but stack the rest while you look: SNAP's working-household tier reaches $4,019 a month for a family of four, kids stay covered through Child Health Plus, and 211 (or 311 in NYC) finds local rent and utility funds.
