Utah Legal Services provides free civil legal help to low-income Utahns. It handles noncriminal matters like housing and eviction, family safety, public benefits, and consumer problems. Apply online through the intake system at utahlegalservices.org, or call the main office at 801-328-8891.
Eligibility is income-based. Utah Legal Services serves individuals and families whose income is within 125 percent of the federal poverty level. Applicants must also have very limited assets, not just low income. If money is tight, apply rather than assume you earn too much.
There is an important exception for safety. Victims of serious, recent physical violence are served regardless of income or citizenship status. So domestic violence help is not gated on how much you earn or your immigration status.
The programs cover the cases that keep a family stable. Case types include domestic violence, family, housing, food stamps and WIC, financial assistance, Medicaid, SSI and SSDI, consumer, and estate plans and senior matters.
In Utah County, there is a second option. Timpanogos Legal Center runs a free legal advice hotline for self-represented people at 801-649-8895, Monday through Friday, 9am to 2pm. It helps with family law, protective orders, and housing cases, mainly in the Utah County area.
Move fast and stack help. Call the day an eviction notice or court paper arrives, and dial 2-1-1 for local rent funds that can clear a balance before a case grows. You may qualify for help, but the program decides after it reviews your case.
