Vermont WIC is the USDA program for Women, Infants and Children. It gives food benefits, nutrition education, breastfeeding support, and counseling. It serves pregnant Vermonters, new parents, and caregivers with children under 5. Food benefits load onto a card you use with the WICShopper app at approved stores.
WIC covers several groups of people. You may qualify if you are pregnant, if you were pregnant in the last 6 months including a loss, if you are breastfeeding or chestfeeding with an infant up to 12 months old, or if you have an infant or child up to 5 years old. A parent, caregiver, or guardian can apply for a child.
You must live in Vermont, and there is an income test. WIC uses income guidelines set at 185 percent of the federal poverty level, updated each year. That line is higher than for some other programs, so a working family that does not get food stamps may still qualify for WIC.
There is a shortcut on the income test. If you already take part in 3SquaresVT, Medicaid, or TANF, that generally settles the income test for you. This is called adjunctive eligibility, and it can make your application simpler.
WIC is more than food. It offers nutrition education, breastfeeding help, and counseling. Once you are enrolled, appointments are set about every 6 months, and they may include a check of your income, identity, and Vermont residency.
