Washington 211

Last updated August 2026

When you do not know which Washington program to call, dial 2-1-1. A real person answers, backed by a statewide directory of more than 17,000 local resources. It is free, confidential, multilingual, and open to anyone in Washington, with no eligibility screen. From outside the state, or if 211 will not connect, call 1-877-211-9274. Prefer typing? Text 211WAOD to 898211, or search the directory yourself at search.wa211.org.

The scale tells you what to expect. In one recent year, WA 211 handled 306,712 contacts and made 685,115 referrals, with roughly 60 agents fielding about 1,180 calls a day. That means hold times at peak, and it also means a quarter million people solved their problem through the self-serve directory. Searching first can genuinely be faster than calling.

The coverage spans rent and utility help, food, housing, healthcare, elder care, child care and after-school programs, and mental health support. In a disaster, 211 becomes the state's referral point; it is currently supporting wildfire survivors, including free temporary housing through a partnership with Airbnb.org.

Know what it is and is not. WA 211 is a nonprofit program of United Way, not a government benefits office; it cannot approve benefits itself. It refers, and its value is knowing which local agencies have money or open intake right now, which changes month to month.

Make the call count: give your zip code and a one-sentence version of the problem, ask for more than one referral, and write down each name, number, and hours before hanging up. The first agency on a list is not always the one with funds this week.

Pair 211 with the statewide front doors: washingtonconnection.org for food, cash, and care applications, wahealthplanfinder.org for Apple Health, and the eviction screening line at 1-855-657-8387 if court papers arrived. For a suicidal or mental health crisis, call or text 988 instead, any hour.
