Washington Basic Food (SNAP)

Basic Food is Washington's SNAP. It puts monthly food money on a Washington Quest EBT card you use like a debit card. Apply online at washingtonconnection.org, by phone at 877-501-2233, in person at a DSHS Community Services Office, or by mail. Every application includes a required interview, done at an office or over that same phone line.

The income rules are wider than the old federal story. Households with countable income at or under 200 percent of the federal poverty guidelines skip the usual gross, net, and resource tests entirely. Households outside that group face the standard limits: for one person, $1,696 gross and $1,305 net a month. Either way DSHS still budgets your income to set the amount, so the only way to know your number is to apply.

The money is real, and zero-income households get the maximum: $298 a month for one person, $546 for two, $785 for three, $994 for four, plus $218 for each additional member. Deductions for rent, child care, child support you pay, and medical costs over $35 for older or disabled members all push your benefit up, so report your expenses honestly.

Speed is a genuine feature here. Benefits usually load the morning after approval, and households in immediate need can qualify for expedited same-day service. Say so plainly at the interview if your cupboards are bare. Benefits arrive by 6 a.m. on the same date each month, weekends included, and unused amounts roll over.

Two Washington-specific doors people miss. Legal immigrants barred from federal SNAP only by immigration status may qualify for the state-funded Food Assistance Program on the same application. And DSHS says it plainly: applying for or receiving Basic Food does not make you a public charge.

Adults 18 to 64 without a child under 14 at home face a three-months-in-36 limit unless they meet work rules or an exemption, so ask your worker where you stand. And while the case processes, dial 2-1-1 for the nearest food bank; no paperwork needed at most.
