Alabama's Weatherization Assistance Program improves the energy efficiency of low-income homes to cut energy costs. Because the work stays with the home, the savings repeat for years. The state energy office, ADECA, funds it, and it operates in all 67 counties.
The income line is 200 percent of the federal poverty level, which reaches well into working-household territory, so a job does not rule you out.
The work follows an assessment. Participants agree to minor home improvements based on an energy audit by trained professionals, which also includes health and safety checks. The audit decides what your specific home needs.
Some households move up the list. The program prioritizes the elderly, people with disabilities, and families with children, so say if any of those describe your home when you apply.
As with LIHEAP, you do not apply through the state. ADECA contracts with local Community Action Agencies and a regional planning commission to deliver the work, and you apply through the agency serving your county.
