Indiana's Weatherization Assistance Program makes free energy-efficiency improvements to lower your bills for good. It serves households up to 200 percent of the federal poverty level, or anyone already found eligible for the Energy Assistance Program. Both renters and homeowners can apply, though the home itself must meet certain conditions to be weatherized.
The savings are real: weatherized homes see energy bills fall by an average of about $283 a year. Because the work stays with the home, that saving repeats.
The work follows an assessment. A state-trained auditor chooses the measures, which can include insulation and air sealing around doors and windows, duct and heating-pipe insulation, repair or replacement of heating systems, efficient lighting, and installing smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
The 200 percent income line reaches well into working-household territory, so a job does not rule you out. And if you already got Energy Assistance, you are already eligible for weatherization.
