Weatherization Assistance Program (Montana)

Montana's Weatherization Assistance Program makes free energy-efficiency improvements to your home. The work lowers how much energy you use, so your bills can drop for the long run. Both homeowners and renters can apply, at any time of year. Use the combined LIEAP and Weatherization application filed with your local eligibility office. The program is delivered by Human Resource Development Councils, called HRDCs, and Tribal LIHEAP offices across Montana. One combined form covers both weatherization and LIEAP heating help. So you can ask about both at the same time.
Eligibility is based on income and household size. For the 2025 to 2026 program year, the upper income limit is $64,300 for a household of four. For a household of one it is $31,300, and for a household of three it is $53,300. This limit is set at 200 percent of the poverty guidelines.
The process starts with a visit. An energy auditor comes to look at what your home needs. Then a crew or contractor installs the improvements that save the most energy for the cost. Workers may not install everything, but they focus on the most important measures first.
Common work includes cleaning, tuning, repairing, or replacing heating systems. It also includes wall, floor, ceiling, attic, and foundation insulation, air sealing with a blower-door test, water-heater and pipe insulation, better lighting, and health and safety fixes. Montana State University Extension also offers do-it-yourself weatherization tips.
