Weatherization Assistance Program (Nebraska)

Last updated August 2026

Nebraska's Weatherization Assistance Program makes free home energy-efficiency improvements for income-eligible households. The work includes things like insulation and air sealing. These fixes stay with the home, so they lower your energy bills for a long time. Both homeowners and renters can qualify. Funding is limited, so a waiting list may apply.

The program is run by the Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy, also called DWEE or NDEE. It is connected to the LIHEAP energy-assistance program. Weatherization and its related repair program carry their own eligibility rules. Those rules are separate from the LIHEAP fuel-assistance rules. So being income-eligible for one does not automatically decide the other.

Eligibility is income-based. Income-eligible households can qualify, and both owners and renters can apply. Households with a member who gets ADC or SSI are automatically income-eligible. If that fits your home, say so when you contact the program. This page cannot promise approval, since the program reviews your income and home first.

There is a related repair program to know about. It is called Heating, Cooling, Repair and Replacement Assistance, or HCRRA. HCRRA can repair a heating or cooling system, or buy and install a new one, up to $5,000. So if your furnace or air conditioner has failed, ask whether HCRRA can help, not just weatherization.

The work is chosen to save the most energy for your specific home. That is why an assessment of the home usually comes first. Because funding is limited, apply before an emergency, not during one. Getting on the list early gives your home a better chance when funds are available.

To apply or get information, contact DWEE. You can call (402) 471-2186 for weatherization and HCRRA. The state also lists a help line at 1-877-253-2603 for finding the provider that serves your area. You can pair weatherization with LIHEAP, which helps with this season's bill, and dial 2-1-1 for other local utility funds.
