South Carolina's Weatherization Assistance Program helps low-income families lower energy bills by making homes more energy efficient, using advanced testing to find where a home wastes energy. Because the improvements stay with the home, the savings repeat for years.
Eligibility runs on income and residency. You must be a South Carolina resident who needs help with home energy costs, with income at or below the program's maximum levels, the 200 percent of poverty standard used for federal weatherization. Ask your local agency for the current dollar figures, which change by program year.
Some households skip the income math. If you receive Supplemental Security Income or Aid to Families with Dependent Children, you are automatically eligible for weatherization services. And preference goes to households that are elderly (60 or older), have a disabled member, or have children under 18.
Renters are not shut out. Eligibility is based on income and residency, and renters may qualify with their landlord's agreement, so a tenant with a cooperative landlord should still apply.
